Montenegro has five unique National Parks: Durmitor, Skadar Lake, Lovćen, Biogradska Gora, and Prokletije. Each park offers different activities and sights to see.
Skadar Lake National Park is home to 280 bird species, making bird watching a popular activity. Visitors can rent kayaks or boats to explore the lake's azure waters, visit historic monasteries and fortresses, and explore smaller islands. Boat tours usually include swimming breaks and visits to highlights such as Montenegrin Alcatraz, castle Grmožur, and Murići Beach. Dining in a restaurant and trying some of the local culinary delicacies, such as dried carp and smoked bleak fish with local wine, is also recommended.
Lovćen National Park offers picnic spots, bike rides, and a small settlement called Ivanova Korita that provides fun for the entire family. The Mausoleum, which protects the remains of Montenegro's greatest leader and poet Petar II Petrović Njegoš, is the park's main attraction. The mausoleum can be reached by climbing 461 steps and features gigantic figures of Montenegrin women carved from black granite. Visitors can also try Njeguški prosciutto, a famous Montenegrin product.
Biogradska Gora National Park is one of the last rainforests in Europe, with trees 40 meters tall and over 500 years old. Visitors can enjoy a bike ride or a stroll and explore six glacial lakes, with Lake Biograd being the most magical. Mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, and panoramic tours are some of the fun activities available in the park. Eco-katuns (cottages) are quite popular and perfect for those who seek absolute comfort and relaxation. Visitors can also try homemade products like kačamak.
Durmitor National Park is a UNESCO Heritage Site that offers a ton of excitement and fun. Climbing Durmitor's highest peak, Bobotov Kuk, is one of the most challenging mountain-climbing feats in Montenegro. Alternatively, "Via Ferrata" is a secure hiking trail with cables and metal treads that make crossing the mountains easier. Visitors can also go rafting and canyoning in canyons such as Tara, Sušica, Komarnica, Nevidio, and Draga. The 18 glacier lakes of Durmitor are also called Mountain Eyes, with the Black Lake being the greatest. It is great for strolls or picnics along the lake's shore.
Prokletije National Park is a rugged mountain giant that features over 20 summits breaking the 2500m mark, making it the biggest challenge for mountaineers. Canyoning, mountaineering, hiking, trekking, and fly fishing are the main attractions. Lake Hrid, also known as the Lake of Happiness, is a calmer side of the park. Visitors can make a wish at the lake, and it will be fulfilled, provided they drop a token of appreciation into the lake.
